This is my entry to the Editorial and Column Writing contest during the 2011 SMART-PIA Journalism Seminar Workshop. Ha!

President Benigno "PNoy" Aquino delivered his second State of the Nation Address last Monday, July 25th. As expected, contained in his speech were his accomplishments and his promises to improve the state of our nation. These promises include the elimination of corruption in every government agency, better benefits for policemen and members of the armed forces, etc.

If we are to believe everything PNoy said during his speech, we can say he has done marvelously during his first year as President. It's relatively easy to believe every point the President pointed out. He presented facts and figures to back his claim up. But then again, it is also very easy to come up with statistics out of thin air. PNoy has in his hands a group of intelligent individuals capable of conjuring up very believable facts and figures to make it appear that the President is on the right track.

Also, we cannot rely entirely on statistics. We've heard from way before -- the percentage of hungry people has decreased by n points; crime rate has lowered; and so on and so forth. However, when we look around us, the opposite of those things mentioned is happening. If PNoy expects people to really believe what he says, drastic changes must be seen in our surroundings. Forget about the "he's only been President for a year, give him more time to adjust" crap. We have seen leaders before, though not necessarily politicians, who have been able to make visible changes in so short a period of time.

However, we should give where credit is due. His first year in office wasn't exactly a Cinderella story but at least he stayed away from the path of corruption. At least he is still humble. At least PNoy is trying. But maybe he should try harder?

On the same day President Aquino delivered his "wang-wang" filled SONA, former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria M. Arroyo, the very same person whom PNoy loathes big time, was hospitalized due to a spine injury, many conspiracy theorists have come up with this new idea that Arroyo is just using the "injury" as a way of avoiding all the graft and corruption charges filed against her.

Whilst there is a possibility of it happening, why would Rep. Arroyo go through all the trouble of faking a serious injury just to avoid criminal charges against her? If she is indeed running away from facing the law, she could do so in ways not involving health.

Health issues obviously should not be messed with. This may sound superstitious but faking sickness could lead to one being actually sick. Children who say they're sick to be free of the obligation of going to school for the day end up getting sick for real. This could as well be a punishment from God for lying about being sick/injured.

Everyone is free to come up with conspiracy theories about Rep. Arroyo but come on, do not bring in to the conversation her spine injury. She is at risk of permanent paralysis. The least we could do to console with her is to lay off the verbal punches. Even PNoy said all these crazy ideas is "unchristian".

July 1, 2011 is a day many students of West Visayas State University (WVSU) will remember for a long time. And no, it will not be because it was the day of one of the most memorable acquaintance party in recent times. It will be remembered because of an accident that happened during the party.

As students were lining up in front of the WVSU Cultural Center for a pageant, a stampede happened leaving numerous students injured, including a Bachelor of Journalism freshman who needed stitches to close her wounds. Students who witnessed the accident as it transpired said that the stampede began when it started to rain and everyone was rushing in the Cultural Center lobby. Due to the volume of students occupying the very un-spacious lobby, and everyone was pushing each other, the glass sliding doors broke. The glass shards injured the students.

Like in most cases, this accident could have been avoided. Although the University Student Council (USC) did a well in the preparations for the party, they should have carefully planned out the pageant would go smoothly. As we all know, events like this trigger raucous behavior among people. The USC should have seen this coming a mile away. However, they are not entirely to blame.

The students who fled from the rain should have done so in an orderly manner. That is not to say they should have formed straight lines while running for cover. What I'm trying to say is that the students should have calmly walked to the Cultural Center or other places that could provide shelter from the rain. The keyword there is "calmly". The accident would have been avoided had everyone been calm. Remember, rowdiness, that is the exact opposite of calmness, is contagious. Rowdiness usually leads to bad things.

One thing students always clamor about is the "exorbitant fees" that are being payed during enrollment. It's the same complaint year after year after year. There is the University Student Council fee, the publications fee, and so on and so forth. These fees are on top of the tuition fee that students pay for them to be able to study quality tertiary education. So why must we pay these fees anyway?

The answer is simple, really. Let's face it. Nothing in this life is free. Even breathing isn't free, you have to exert effort to inhale and exhale. Thus, you exchange energy for air. But seriously, nothing in this life is free. You want quality education? You pay money. You want quality service? You pay money. Money is the life and blood of an institution. Without money, the USC cannot conduct its activities, like the acquaintance party, that everyone enjoys about. Without money, the school publication will not be able to share knowledge to the world.

Getting by in life today is really difficult. Money problems hover at the top of everyone's list of problems. However, paying school fees are a little sacrifice one must pay if he/she wishes to attain the education he/she wants. It may sound pessimistic, but that's reality. Deal with it.

I still can't believe this piece of whatever got PIA to recognize me as one of the "most promising writers in column writing"
. Nevertheless, I'm actually happy. I'd like to thank God for making my brain work. He also deserves thanks because without him, I could never be able to write even a single sentence. And I'd like to thank Nescafe for making good coffee because without it, I would have fallen asleep and not be able to finish this article.
