This is another older post from my other blog. Enjoy.
Wow. What a mouthful of a title. Well, anyway, I'm here to talk about 10 artists who have caught my attention and have charmed me to listen to their sounds. You might find it interesting how "exotic" this list is, considering the genres range from punk rock to (the capitalist-exploited genre of) pop rock.
Okay, some of the compliments (read: praises!) that I'm gonna say about the artists are a bit biased. But who the hell cares? *laugh*
Here we go...
10. Lady GaGa.
I seriously hated her the very first months I learned of her existence. I mean, she claimed in an MTV interview that her "lyrics are smart". Then she released "Love Game" whose intro lyrics say "Let's have some fun, this beat is sick... I wanna take a ride on your disco stick..." Take a ride on your disco stick? What the...? If you call that sequence of words smart, well... Okay, I've run out of sarcastic words to say. Anyway, that's not a smart line. But Lady GaGa shows that talent and intelligence are two different things. She can sing man. Her good voice and those melodic tunes compensate for her lack of intricateness. I am now a fan.
9. Tokio Hotel
Have you heard 'em play? Damn, they are nasty. Vocals are pretty good. The first time I heard Tokio Hotel sing was at the 2008 MTV VMA's. And I was like, "not another Asian band trying to look cool." I mistook the band as coming from Japan (I swear, I didn't know their Tokio was spelled with an "i"). Pretty good vocals, good sounds. Not bad for a couple of emo guys coming from Germany. One word of advice for them: Losen up, okay? I mean, seriously, those pants are way too tight.
8. Selena Gomez/Demi Lovato
Yehey! It's a tie. What the hell? Hey, mind you. I happen to enjoy watching Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place starring Selena Gomez and Sonny With a Chance starring Demi Lovato. As their fan, I think it's an obligation of mine to be their fan in everything they do. Demi's in to singing for over a year. Now, Selena thinks she can sing. Both of 'em are good. I've heard the entirety of their respective albums. Very teenager-ish. Their pop-rock, dance-rock tunes are very catchy. It's gonna stick to the back of your mind the way a baby koala sticks to its mother. Seriously, they'll have a good future in singing. But I think Selena has a better one in acting.
7. Miley Cyrus
To complete the triumvirate (which includes Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez), I present Miley Cyrus! Do I really need to say more about her? She can sing, she can act, she can dance. Plus she's all grown up now (and by grown up I mean smoking hot). You fuckers keep saying that she's the next Britney Spears where she'll waste her life once she's at the peak of popularity. Who are you to say that? Can you see her future or something? And by the way, she's a good singer. Better than you'll ever be. Yeah, that's right. I went there.
6. Hey Monday
Hey Monday, for all of you who don't know, is an American band associated with Fall Out Boy. Like Panic at the Disco, Cobra Starship, and Gym Class Heroes, they became popular thanks to a certain Pete Wentz, F.O.B.'s bassist (the world is in debt to you). Cassadee Pope, Hey Monday's vocalist has a really good voice to match her pretty face. They've made good music, really catchy tunes, which you can listen to by downloading their album, Hold on Tight. It's got sentimental songs, and hard rocking songs that'll make you wanna dance your ass off.
5. Arnel Pineda of Journey
I got hooked a bit on Journey when the only available CD to play on the car's music player was Journey's Revelation, a greatest hits album. Arnel's got a good voice that resembles the voice of Journey's original vocalist (forgot his name... sorry, man). His good singing voice makes you wanna be proud your a Filipino, right? Yeah whatever. But I do love his hair, though.
4. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Seriously, these guys have got to be one of the best unappreciated talents ever. Vocalist Ronnie Winter has a wide vocal range. He can scream, sing in a falsetto, and many more musical terms that I'm too lazy to research about and mention. They have really intricate lyrics, deep, deep lyrics which convey a deep meaning. The point here is, they're that damn good. And few people like them. For those of you who don't like TRJA, you're missing half of your life. Or maybe a quarter of your life. Whichever you prefer.
3. Taylor Swift
Who doesn't like Taylor Swift? Right... There are a few haters out there. But they're just a few people who don't know talent when they see (or hear) one. Good voice, smart lyrics, and she can play the guitar. Aww man, and she's just what? Nineteen? Turning 20? She's got a nice future ahead of hear, as long as she doesn't let the fame get the best of her. And she seriously a contender in the hottest chick in this list category. Just take a look at this damn picture. Beauty with a dash of hotness. Good voice. Awwwwwwwww hell yeah. That spells I'll be loving your music for the rest of my life. Well, only until you retire, Taylor. Which we hope will be far from now. And before I end my Taylor Swift for President-like speech, I just want every hater to know that you are wasting your time hating Taylor. More people like her than those who hate her. Remember, if you can't beat ;em, join em! Eat that, motherhugger. Word.
2. Paramore
Paramore, my second favorite band. [paramore] They're just like TRJA (only with a bigger fanbase). Deep lyrics, deep meaning, nice vocals, wide vocal range. Hayley Williams is a good vocalist. Plus she's funny. And pretty. And smoking hot. And she's got red hair (Hayley's sporting her orange hair here in this picture... but hey, you can't make orange without red)! Let's see... That's smart (intelligence), funny (wits), beautiful (physical perfection) and she's a Christian (faith). Spells success to me. Hard rocking songs (Ignorance), very catchy pop-punk sounds (That's What You Get), punk rock tunes (Misery Business), emo sounds (We Are Broken), and screamo music (My Heart), Paramore offers a wide variety of choices in songs. Makes you wanna love 'em more. Word.
1. Green Day
This is where the bias comes in. Green Day's my favorite band, therefore they sit at number one. But Green Day is simply good, they don't need my (or your) biases to sit at the numero uno spot. Billie Joe Armstrong's been singing since the age of five, Mike Dirnt's been in a band at age nine, and Tré Cool's also been in a band at age 10. Impressive. They've been in the music scene since they were kids. That's talent. You may not know how good Green Day is. That's because, here in the Philippines, we didn't have a punk scene. But go to East Bay, Berkeley, California where the 1980's punk scence was prominent (ironically, that scene started at a Filipino club called "Mabuhay Gardens") and they'll tell you how good Green Day is. Plus, Green Day's music is very relevant. They're not like those other musicians who know nothing what to write about but love (yes, love is an important topic, but it ain't the only topic). They're currently ranting about the 21st Century!
Okay. There. Ten talented musicians. Hope you like 'em, too. I am out, just like Allen Iverson from the NBA. (Okay, I know I could get a better outro than that).
