Music Mania 2

(This is an older post from my other blog that I find good enough to be re-posted here, in my new, permanent blog)

Some of my all-time favorite songs are really overplayed, both by radio stations and by self-proclaimed music fanatics on their iPods. This is a big deal to me because oftentimes, there are people who don't appreciate the songs as much as I do. They just listen to them because they're catchy or because they stir emotions, failing to acknowledge the beauty of the song's meaning and appreciate the sophisticated lyrics the artists work so hard to put together.
So, here is a list of 10 of my favorite, badly overplayed songs:

10. LOVE STORY by Taylor Swift
Who hasn't heard of this song? You'd have to live in a cave up in the mountains if you answer "Me!" to my question. Love Story is played in every radio stations over and over again, as well as in school programs and other social functions. Romeo and Juliet must feel sick for telling their love story over and over again, don't you think?

9. Thunder by Boys Like Girls
Girls love to think their boyfriends are singing this song to and for them. Who would blame them? After all, this song is all mushy and romantic. Boys Like Girls vocalist Martin Johnson wrote this song for his high school sweetheart, so all the romantic dudes out there could relate.

8. In the End by Linkin Park
This is arguably Linkin Park's most famous song. In the End is one of the most played rock song by a foreign artist here in the Philippines. Basically everywhere manly men hang out, In the End is a staple song to listen to. Its blend of rap and rock, two genres tambays enjoy, makes it very popular to both rap and rock music lovers.

7. It Ends Tonight by The All-American Rejects
It Ends Tonight is a very emotional power ballad. The keyword here is "emotional". Music lovers, uhm, love music that appeals to emotion, so it's really a no brainer as to why this song is overplayed. Aside from the sad feel to the song, the lyrics are really intricate and many can relate to the song which is all about ending a bad relationship.

6. Drive by Incubus
A simple but very nice song, Drive is one of the average rock star's favorite song. Incubus' talents in making catchy tunes, nice acoustic sounds and deep, sophisticated lyrics are showcased here. It's THAT good. It even appeals to music lovers aren't into the kind of rock Incubus is known for.

5. Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
Winning a Grammy award for Best Rock song in the 2005 Grammy Awards pretty much sums up the reason behind Boulevard of Broken Dreams' being overplayed. This is Green Day's first alternative rock single, and a very emotional one at that. And like what I've said before, songs that appeal to emotions tend to be overplayed by radio stations.

4. 21 Guns by Green Day
Probably right now, you'd come to realize what my favorite band is (hint: it starts with a "G" and ends with a "reen Day"). 21 Guns, a current Green Day single is very emotional, which is again the reason for its being overplayed. This is one of the songs I think is very under appreciated. People tend to overlook the fact that Green Day vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong actually sings in a falsetto, which says a lot about his vocal range.

3. The Only Exception by Paramore
Let me clear it out for everyone. Paramore is a freaking rock band, not some boy band-ish band with a female vocalist. The Only Exception sounds like a love song which attributes to its abundance in airtime in top-ten countdowns (not like this) and radio stations. What's really sad is that people hear The Only Exception, they immediately claim to be Paramore fans, when in reality, they haven't even heard of Paramore's more guitar riff-oriented rock songs.

2. Your Guardian Angel by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Your Guardian Angel is badly overplayed because of its emotional nature. It is a love song with very sentimental lyrics. Your Guardian Angel is like The Only Exception. This song gives people the wrong idea that The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is another emo band who know nothing but sing love songs. Much like TOE, people hear Your Guardian Angel and immediately claim to be The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus fans. And they haven't even the angrier side of TRJA.

1. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day
My favorite song of all time is badly overplayed. *Sigh* Wake Me Up When September Ends is a song about Green Day vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong's dad who died when Billie was just 10. There's the emotional factor again. The lyrics are emotional. The guitar riffs are emotional. Even the music video is emotional!

There. That's my list of badly overplayed, favorite songs of mine. I couldn't blame people for overplaying them, they are after all great songs. So, why don't you get your MP3's and enjoy awesome music? While you're at it, listen to the songs I just listed.
Have a rockin' good day.
