Trapo Ka!

Last Tuesday, March 1st , the student body of our school elected a new set of University Student Council (USC) officers for academic year 2011 - 2012. Yesterday, March 3rd another election was held, this time to choose the officers of the different college student councils (in my case, the Arts and Sciences Student Council or ASSC) for the same academic year stated a while ago.
We all know the crap that goes with politics in the real world. Everybody all of a sudden becomes your close friend and your the nicest guy in town. Same thing happens during school elections. So, when they say school is a training ground for life, I guess they also meant a training ground in the realm of politics.
Basing on what I've seen, heard and experienced, students, even the most idealistic ones, aren't exempted from trapo-ish (traditional politicians) activities. I wouldn't go as far as saying that cheating (vote buying, etc) happened, although it is possible that it did but I am unaware of it.
Anyways, the candidates (most if not all) displayed trapo-ish attitudes like: backstabbing opponents; saying they're there to serve, not just to satisfy his/her megalomania; spreading stories to blacken opponents' names; and be friends with opponents to the point of shaking hands IF voters are nearby.
I'm also pretty sure these incidents I just mentioned aren't just isolated cases in our school, but they are rather common incidents that happen in almost every schools not just in Iloilo but the entire country as well.
This doesn't bode well for us. We already have enough trapos in the government. I find it rather disturbing that the generation dubbed as "The Hope of the Motherland" is, in actuality, being trained to become the very same persons the said generation despises.
